Weird…..AS Elections Cancelled

Once again CSUN Associated Students’ electronic voting system had some major glitches and the elections were cancelled. After spending about $14,000 on elections the system still failed. It failed because the campus consultant who built it did a bad job at it and no longer works there.

Then Student Affairs was left to deal with the problem, which they obviously didn’t.

One of the main reasons why the Elections Committee didn’t want to go through with the elections was because some of the ballots already had candidates pre-selected. And because some students wouldn’t notice that, only voting for their friend the committee felt the votes weren’t credible.

This came after the Sundial notified them of the issue.

The other problem arose when students would preview the ballot before voting. After they were done previewing it and they pushed the back button the program said they had already voted when they didn’t.

Now the students who voted must re-cast their vote on Nov. 12 and 13 for their Senators. As it was 1,590 students voted one Tuesday and that’s not including Wednesday. That about as much as those who voted during both days of the last election. It’s highly unlikely whether they will get the same results using paper ballots.

Last year about only 1,800 students out of about 39,000 at CSUN voted during the AS Elections.

So I’ve been trying to get my multimedia reporting project up for a while now and I realized that designing my own Web page is what kept me from actually doing the multimedia work. So I’m going to let wordpress do the job for me.

Hands-Free

I don’t know if the reason I don’t pick up my cellphone while I drive is because it’s the law or because of the article I wrote on it and how stupid I would feel if I got a citation. Either way I don’t buy it. There have been so many studies that show that it’s not the fact that you are using your hands to talk on your cellphone that causes a distraction, but the mere fact that your having a conversation that causes distractions.

All this is doing is helping cellphone providers sell Bluetooth’s and headsets as well as save my minutes. I doubt we’ll see the 300 fewer traffic fatalities the Public Policy Institute of California said we would see. At the same time they said the only time where cellphones contributed to traffic deaths was in bad weather and when roads are wet. So why doesn’t the law only make it illegal to use a cell-phone when it’s raining.

Then there’s the other law that says teenagers can’t use a hands-free device because they’re learning to drive, but as someone astutely pointed out what about those drivers who just got their licenses and are over 18. Aren’t they also just learning how to drive why aren’t they put on a probationary period. Then again the authorities won’t know that and will have no way of identifying them.

No one said laws had to make sense right?
